Mahenderpal Sorya is a visual artist with a socially engaged practice who graduated with an MA in Fine Art in 2018. He has a particular interest in experimental and essay film making and often adopts autoethnographic methodologies for engaging with archive material. Through his work he explores themes of personal and collective diasporic memory, transgenerational trauma and the relationship between trauma and the film viewing experience.
He has worked on several commissions, research and social engagement projects which have centred on first and second generation South Asian experience in the UK. These include projects funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Arts Council England, UK Asian Film Festival and University of the Arts, London.
