London and its surrounding area are very popular locations for international film-makers, but it can be difficult trying to work out what you can and can't do when it comes to filming - especially if you're used to a completely different set of rules.
If you are bringing a production to the area, please tell us about your project and what you want to do. The services of Film London are free. We can assist with locations advice, pre-production meetings, crew and facilities hire and accommodation/travel discounts - amongst other services.
Email with as much information as possible, including details such as:
- Production title
- Type of production (for example, feature/TV)
- Production company
- Production contact(s): names, telephone and mobile numbers, email addresses
- Shoot dates in the UK
- Locations required (and whether you already have a Location Manager)
- Description of the action/scenes
In regards to practical advice, the website for the British High Commission provides information about visas (including film groups). Alternatively, you can contact your nearest Visa Facilitation Service (VFS).
The British Film Commission (BFC) also provides valuable information to international crews, while specific information about tax relief and co-productions can be found on the British Film Institute (BFI) website.
Qualifying as a British film provides a number of advantages; productions are eligible to apply for BFI funding and to enjoy the benefits of the UK's tax relief structures.
South Asian Productions
London has hosted many South Asian productions over the last few years and Film London is very often their first point of contact in the capital. Getting in touch at the very earliest stage of your planning can ensure your time in London is as useful as possible - you can potentially save time and money with our recommendations.
In order to offer the best advice and guidance for South Asian crews we have compiled a handy downloadable document.
