Hetain Patel is an artist interested in connecting marginalised identities with the mainstream in an effort to destabilise notions of authenticity and promote personal freedom. Often with an autobiographical starting point, he uses humour and the languages of popular culture to highlight familiarity within the exotic. He also works with photography, sculpture and performance. He was the winner of the Jarman Award in 2019, was a member of the Jarman Award jury panel in 2020, and is a Film London Jarman Award Patron.
In recent years Patel has held solo exhibitions at Manchester Art Gallery; QUAD, Derby; Chatterjee & Lal, Mumbai and Wood Street Galleries, Pittsburgh. Group shows include Somerset House, London; the 56th Venice Biennale, and Asia Pacific Triennial. Notable live performances include Sadler’s Wells, London and the Serpentine Gallery’s Extinction Marathon, London. Additionally Patel has created a number of multi lingual dance theatre productions, including his commission for Candoco Dance Company, which continues to tour internationally.
