Selected 16

About Selected
In a dimly lit bedroom, a person lies on a bed beneath a translucent mosquito net canopy. Blue moonlight enters through a large-paned window behind them, casting soft shadows across the room. Silhouettes of trees are visible outside, while the figure rests with one arm bent behind their head, creating a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. The image has a dreamlike, cinematic quality, with deep blues and soft focus enhancing the sense of solitude and reflection.

Selected 16 presents a vibrant collection of new short films by some of the most exciting early-career artists working in the UK today. Organised by videoclub and FLAMIN, the nine filmmakers were nominated by artists shortlisted for the Film London Jarman Award 2025.

Bringing together nine distinctive artists' films, Selected 16 offers a snapshot of emerging artists’ moving image practice today. Across documentary, essay film, experimental cinema and analogue filmmaking, the programme explores themes of memory, identity, ecology, migration, community and belonging.

From haunted landscapes and ancestral histories to collective rituals, activist perspectives and personal acts of remembrance, the selected works reveal the breadth, ambition and urgency of contemporary moving image practice across the UK. They reflect how artists are responding to the social, political and environmental realities of the present moment through innovative approaches to film and storytelling.

Selected 16 artists are: Chanthila Phaophanit, Che Applewhaite, Chiemi Shimada, Jack Guariento, Leena Habiballa, Rhiana Bonterre, Rosanna Lee and Viviana Almas.

The programme will tour to leading arts venues across the UK, including Towner Eastbourne, Offline, Spike Island, Nottingham Contemporary, Fabrica and CAST.

A softly focused portrait of an older person with curly grey hair shielding their eyes with one hand. Bright yellow dots connected by lines are superimposed across the image, forming a geometric network that overlays the figure’s face and body. The contrast between the human subject and the graphic intervention suggests themes of mapping, connection, or data visualisation.

Jack Guariento, Bellsmyre Caledonia (2024), film still.

A black-and-white image depicts a figure wearing a wide-brimmed hat and wrapped head covering, holding a carved wooden horse’s head. The subject looks directly towards the viewer with a serious expression. The stark composition and historical aesthetic evoke ritual, performance, or folklore.

Viviana Almas, Solus (2025), film still.

A tightly framed image captures performers wearing elaborate orange and yellow feathered carnival costumes. Layers of feathers fill the composition, creating a dense field of vibrant colour and texture. Faces partially emerge from between the costumes, conveying the energy and spectacle of a carnival procession.
