St Paul's Cathedral
News Story
St Paul’s Cathedral is a vibrant church, a national treasure, and one of London’s most powerful geomarkers. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the late 17th century, it has served as the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of London for more than 1,400 years. Set on Ludgate Hill, the highest point in the City of London, its iconic dome has shaped the capital’s skyline for over 300 years, rising 365 feet and once standing as London’s tallest building.
St Paul’s has appeared on screen since the earliest days of filmmaking and continues to play a starring role in film and television today. From Tom Cruise scaling the building in Mission: Impossible – Fallout to giraffes running through the Nave in Wonka, the Cathedral has hosted an extraordinary range of productions. Screen credits include Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Mary Poppins Returns, Paddington 2, The Madness of King George, and Netflix’s The Diplomat, reflecting a rich and varied cinematic history.
One of its greatest strengths is the breadth of locations available within a single, unmistakable setting. Internally, the Geometric Staircase, Whispering Gallery, Triforium, Library, Nave, and the vast Crypt each offer distinct atmospheres and visual possibilities. Externally, the iconic West Front and Dome provide a dramatic backdrop for city car chases, helicopter landings, and even alien invasions, alongside historic roadways and surrounding gardens.
The Cathedral has extensive experience working with large-scale film franchises as well as smaller factual and documentary productions. Its team offers expert guidance on rigging plans for lighting cranes, external generator placement, and discreet cable runs into internal sets. The Crypt, the largest in Europe, provides generous space for catering, crew facilities, and crowd holding for hundreds, while nearby parking and crane access are available in partnership with the City of London Corporation. Secure green rooms can also be accommodated within the Chapter House.
For filmmakers seeking scale, character, and an unmistakable presence, St Paul’s Cathedral provides a beloved setting unlike anywhere else in London — right at its heart.
