Terence Davies
Terence Davies (1945-2023) was a singularly idiosyncratic, independent filmmaker, who moved in the same circles as Derek Jarman. He was announced as a Film London Jarman Award Patron in 2020.
Recurring themes in Davies' film work include memory and its close relationship to popular culture, particularly music and movies; the disjunction between bleak lives and glittering fantasies. Spare and austere, his elegant films tend to be contemplative and deliberately paced and have been hailed as sublime works of art.
"We were deeply saddened to hear of the recent death of Terence Davies, a Jarman Award Patron and announcer of the award back in 2015.
Terence was an extraordinary film-making talent, an inspiration for many film-makers and artists. He leaves a huge legacy through his remarkable body of work. We were honoured to have worked with him and our thoughts remain with his friends and family."
