FILM LONDON LODESTARS: Mahenderpal Sorya
WHAT WE SAY
Having spent a year working with Mahenderpal during his time on The FLAMIN Fellowship 2021-22, we’re really excited to see his latest project, The Krueger Institute, come to life. Exploring intergenerational trauma through the horror movies, this project is thoroughly researched and unpicks screen memories and genre tropes through Mahenderpal’s forensic and thoughtful eye.
BIO
Mahenderpal’s practice spans a broad range of media including moving image, sculpture, painting, performance and social engagement. Through his work he explores themes of personal and collective diasporic memory, trans-generational trauma
and the relationship between film spectatorship and trauma. Based on memories of childhood dreams and nightmares, his current practice centres on the impact of early film viewing experiences, explored through a psychoanalytic lens.
A large part of Mahenderpal’s practice also involves facilitating socially engaged projects and he has worked on several commissions, research and social engagement projects which have centred on first and second generation South Asian memory and experience in the UK. He is currently working on a range of community filmmaking/photography projects with participants in the town he grew up in: Southall, West London.
