FILM LONDON LODESTARS: Joseph Wilson
"Joseph is definitely a talented filmmaker, driven by a very strong sense of aesthetics and with a story to tell. It's fascinating to enter his visual world. There is such confidence in the work and there is almost tangible synergy with the actors and participants."
Chris Rawcliffe (Artistic Director, Forma Arts)
Joseph Wilson is a queer artist, activist and drag performer, living amongst the eclectic East London community. His work explores LGBTQ+ narratives, taking inspiration from his own lived experiences as well as documenting the people and places around him. Joseph was a recipient of the FLAMIN Fellowship 2020/21 and made Isn’t It A Beautiful World, a short film that, through lip-syncing, depicts the traumatising stories of queer performers Soroya, Harry & Kenya and their emotional journey to adulthood.
Joseph's film won the Circa x Dazed Class of 2021 prize (announced by Marina Abramovic, much to Joseph’s—and our—excitement), and screened on Piccadilly Circus, Shinjuku, Tokyo and K-Pop Square, Seoul. It went on to play at a number of festivals, including the 65th BFI London Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam 2022, Go Short 2022, Regard Festival 2022, San Francisco International Film Festival 2022 and Toronto Queer Film Festival 2022. It was also chosen for Sheffield DocFest’s Alternative Realities Art Talent Market. Signed as a director to award-winning production company PrettyBird, Joseph is now working towards his first feature film.
