News Story
Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network (FLAMIN), London’s Screen Archives (LSA) and Brent Museum and Archives are excited to announce a new residency for an artist to undertake a period of research and produce a creative response as part of the Becoming Brent programme.
Becoming Brent is organised in the centenary year of the British Empire Exhibition, a grand celebration of imperial power held in Wembley Park in 1924. Across a series of public events, Becoming Brent will explore the harsh realities of Britain’s colonial past and its ongoing legacy. One of the most diverse boroughs in London, Brent has strong connections to countries that were formerly under British colonial rule, including significant local communities of South Asian and Caribbean descent.
This artist residency comes as one of a number of creative outputs that will explore the impact of empire and its significance for Brent and its communities. It is also hoped that the outcome will encourage people to donate material to Brent Museum and Archives to increase representation of the borough’s diverse community within the collections.
Artist Residency Brief
- The selected artist will explore the impact and legacy of the British Empire by engaging with moving image archive and other materials in the Brent Museum and Archive collection.
- Following a period of research, the artist will be invited to produce an audience-facing outcome. This could include a moving image work, an installation, or a live event.
- In addition to responding directly to archival material, the work could be inspired by other local histories, such as oral reminiscences.
- The project will be presented as part of the Becoming Brent programme at a venue in the local area or at multiple sites across the borough.
- Support from the Brent Archive Officer and the FLAMIN and LSA teams will be available to the artist throughout the project.
Fees
The selected artist will receive:
- £3,000 to support their research. (This is estimated on the basis of 10-12 days work e.g. one day per week across 12 weeks).
- £3,200 to deliver a public-facing response developed from research undertaken over the residency period. This includes the artist’s fee and additional costs involved in the residency outcome (e.g. clearances of archival material).
Eligibility
- Artists who work with moving image as part of their practice
- Artists based in London
- Preference will be given to artists with a connection to Brent (i.e. currently or previously living or working in Brent, or with other strong links with the area).
