Applications for Micro Market are now open.
Designed specifically for filmmakers with smaller budgets but big ambitions, the Micro Market strand of the Production Finance Market (PFM) gives filmmakers the chance to meet with financiers looking for projects with a smaller price tag.
The Micro Market strand is designed to support projects budgeted at levels not currently served by other finance markets, and help filmmakers source finance for specific feature films.
Is Micro Market for you?
Micro Market is for filmmaker teams based within the UK or Europe, with a fully-scripted first or second feature ready to be financed and a production budget of under €1m.
Projects that are looking for completion money to deliver their film are also considered. These projects must be budgeted at €1m or under, and be seeking no more than 20% of their production budget for completion.
It is intended that any selected European filmmakers will be able to access state and/or regional financial assistance to attend the market where this is offered.
The market will run 10-11 October 2017 as part of BFI London Film Festival.
The deadline for applications is Monday 3 July.
How it works
Micro Market filmmakers are given specialised training, followed by the opportunity to pitch and discuss their projects with financiers, investment funds, sales companies, distributors, post houses, online and VOD platforms and public agencies at PFM.
On the Market day, the filmmaking teams present their projects to the financiers in a day-long series of intense 30-minute meetings. Teams will have up to 12 meetings during the day.
Micro Market film teams will also have the opportunity to network with financiers and participants from the other strand of PFM in our general events during the market.
The Micro Market stream provides a thorough programme of training to the filmmakers before the market, typically two weeks prior.
Training may cover:
- The art of the pitch
- Cost/budget drivers
- One-to-one sessions interrogating finance plans and the directors artistic ambition
- Alternative finance sources for low budget films, negotiation and deal making
- Case studies on previous successful Micro Market projects
Training normally takes place in London in late September (date tbc). Film Makers based outside the UK are not expected to attend but will have specially tailored one to one sessions with industry experts in the lead up to the market.
The day before the market meetings, all filmmakers will re-present their projects to their peer group to gather feedback and finesse their pitches whilst also attending special case studies and panel events.
A networking evening with all PFM delegates is scheduled the night before the market.

"The incredible pool of talent working in the micro to small budget space is all too easily overlooked, but it is in this space that you often find the next big thing."
Andrea Scarso, Investment Manager, Ingenious
"I found the experience hugely rewarding: we had more meetings in one day than I thought possible, and all of them were valuable. I would encourage any producer working at this budget level to apply."
Cassandra Sigsgaard, The Girl in the Corn
“Micro Market was brilliantly run, with high quality projects and talent.”
