We at Film London are excited to announce Aesthetics Academy, our new Hair & Makeup Programme, supported by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Channel 4.

The programme seeks to tackle the current lack of ethnic diversity within the Hair & Makeup department, minimise the existing skills gap, enhance employability, and ensure the well-being of crew. With two tailored pathways, it is designed to:

  • Equip Hair and Makeup Supervisors with the training and support needed to elevate to Designer level in High-End TV (HETV), Feature Films, and Scripted Drama and, become part of our Elevation Squad.
  • Support those with hair and/or makeup experience outside of Film and TV in transferring into Trainee positions within the hair and makeup department of Film and TV and, become one of our Aesthetic Trailblazers.

WHAT IS THE ELEVATION SQUAD?

The Elevation Squad will be a group of unity and purpose. The programme is designed to elevate the careers of the squad and, amplify their industry presence. Together, the group will be on a journey of growth, forward

momentum and, significant industry impact. To be eligible for the Elevation Squad, one must:

  • Be aged 18 and above (no upper age limit)
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK.
  • At least three credits working as a Supervisor (or equivalent) across on or more of the following; HETV, Feature Films, Scripted/Unscripted drama.
  • Have served in a key role at least twice or a department head role at least once.

A referral or recommendation from either a production company, HMU department head, Line producer or director is preferred.

WHAT WILL THE AESTHETICS ACADEMY PROGRAMME CONSIST OF?

The programme will consist of:

  • 7 training sessions over a 4-month period, taking place every other week. The sessions will be led by Black Beauty Roster, a company with the core mission is to bring meaningful beauty diversity into the industry through opportunity, advocacy and education.
  • An opportunity to put Leadership training into practice.
  • Post-training support in the form of: 6 months of mentoring, further training opportunities, potential placements and aan industry event to celebrate the completion of your training and, introduce you to the Film and TV industry.

CAN I BE AN AESTHETIC TRAILBLAZER?

The Aesthetic Trailblazers will be pioneers in the field. They will be innovative, have leadership mindsets and, will introduce fresh ideas and approaches. To be an Aesthetic Trailblazer, one must:

  • Be over 18 before the course start date (11th April 2024)
  • Be eligible to work in the UK
  • Have a proven interest in at least one of the following: Art, Design, Beauty and/or Hairdressing
  • Have no prior experience working the UK, TV and Film Industries but, have a demonstrated ambition to do so
WHAT WILL THE AESTHETICS ART ACADEMY PROGRAMME CONSIST OF?

The programme will consist of:

  • 8 weeks of intensive Hair & Makeup training, led by The Iver Academy Make-Up Academy. provides the most outstanding industry-recognised training for the next generation of professional and highly skilled make-up, hair and special effects artists in the UK. It is regarded within the industry as the best and most comprehensive training available. You will be taught by award winning industry professionals at the heart of the world-famous Pinewood Studios and, become an IMA Graduate upon completion of your training.
  • 3 days of set-etiquette training, led by Film London.
  • Post-training support in the form of: 6 months of mentoring, further training opportunities, potential placements and aan industry event to celebrate the completion of your training and, introduce you to the Film and TV industry.
