Vasilisa Petrova is an artist and filmmaker whose work draws on and critically reflects the history of cinematic form. Petrova is interested in the camera as a mediating tool in negotiations of proximity, representation and voyeurism. By using methods of improvisation, chance and play, she takes apart and reassembles formal elements of documentary, experimental and narrative film. She is drawn to psychological tropes such as desire, greed, disgust and shame, and to their mediation and codification through mass culture. Finding her material in seemingly mundane and trivial details of her surroundings, Petrova unsettles habitual ways of seeing by highlighting the grotesque, morally ambiguous, and conspiratorial qualities in conditions of everyday life.
