On 1st December we took over the Garden Cinema for the BFI NETWORK Shorts Showcase, where we screened the best new London short films produced with BFI NETWORK funding in the past year.
Made by some of the capital’s most exciting new filmmakers, the short films showcased span the whole gamut of genres—adventure, comedy, drama, history, musicals and sci-fi. A cast of characters ranging from desperate armed robbers to beleaguered diplomats, lovestruck soldiers to strippers at the end of their tether, parents, sisters, big brothers, friends and lovers, go on journeys to find the truth (or stay in denial), support and uplift each other, stem the pain, and simply be themselves—in short, deeply human journeys.
The shorts included works from BAFTA winner Adjani Salmon (Dreaming Whilst Black) and Isher Sahota (Father Brown) and feature cast including Joseph Marcel (Fresh Prince of Bel Air), Jillian Mercado (The L Word: Generation Q) and Louisa Harland (Derry Girls). We were delighted to be joined by some of the cast and crew behind these fantastic shorts on the day.
From Riz Ahmed to Marley Morrison and Aleem Khan, BFI NETWORK short filmmakers have gone on to do great things. Check out the Film London Shorts channel on Vimeo here for more examples of the exciting work being commissioned by Film London for the BFI NETWORK.
