About the Programme

Building Archival Futures is a mentoring and skills development programme designed to support long-term career sustainability within the moving image archive sector.

This strand focuses on mid-career professionals, supporting their progression, specialisation and retention through structured mentoring and career coaching.

The programme responds to key sector challenges, including limited progression routes, increasing technical and strategic demands, and the need to support a more resilient and inclusive workforce.

This is an unpaid opportunity.

Who This Is For

We are seeking experienced archive professionals to act as mentors.

Mentors will:

  • Be established professionals with significant experience in the sector
  • Provide guidance, insight and support to a mentee over the course of the programme
  • Contribute to strengthening the wider archive community through knowledge-sharing

What You Will Receive

  • Training and guidance on mentoring practice
  • Ongoing support from the programme team
  • Engagement with a peer network of archive professionals

What We’re Looking For

  • Significant professional experience in archives or related fields
  • A commitment to supporting others in their development
  • Willingness to share knowledge, insight and experience

Mentoring Structure

  • Mentors will be carefully matched with a mentee based on experience, interests and goals
  • Six mentoring sessions will take place over a six-month period
  • Sessions will be arranged at mutually convenient times
  • Sessions will primarily be online, with in-person engagement where appropriate

Commitment Required

  • Participation in six mentoring sessions over six months
  • Light-touch preparation and engagement with the mentoring process
  • Engagement in evaluation and feedback
  • Attendance at the introduction session and in-person networking event (optional)

Key Dates (Indicative)

  • Applications open: Friday 24 April 2026
  • Information session (online): Thurs 7 May 2026, 1–2pm
  • Application deadline: Wednesday 20 May 2026
  • Programme delivery: July 2026 – January 2027. Six mentoring sessions will be delivered online, with dates agreed between you and your mentee.
