Build Your Audience

Build Your Audience is currently closed for applications.

A unique and proactive training scheme, Build Your Audience (BYA) offers practical solutions for filmmakers challenged by the complexities of finding audiences for their films.

Our training sessions are led by industry experts, and are aimed at entrepreneurial UK filmmakers keen to explore and interrogate the best way to distribute, sell and promote their feature films and documentaries.

The course provides participants with the skills, knowledge and networks to:

  • Sell their film in the marketplace
  • Source and maximise audiences 
  • Negotiate the impact of digital technologies on distribution and marketing

What it covers

Our new streamlined BYA programme in 2016 was open to first and second-time feature or documentary filmmakers from across the UK with either a project with production finance in place (at least 50%) or near completion (picture lock). Training took place during June and July 2016 over three two-day workshops in Central London.

Between workshop sessions, participants benefitted from the support of a dedicated distribution consultant and devised a tailored distribution and marketing plan for their projects.

The course culminated in a final ‘pitch’ day, where participants presented their developed distribution strategies and received feedback from a panel of industry experts.

Typical workshop sessions included following key areas:

  • The traditional sales and distribution model and how the value chain is changing
  • Positioning and offline marketing
  • Identifying audience trends, profiles and behaviours
  • Typical deals and how to negotiate
  • DIY and 'hybrid' distribution
  • Online marketing including social media and crowdfunding
  • Non-theatrical distribution including television and digital platforms such as VOD and SVOD
  • Exhibition and festival strategy
  • Event releasing

Speakers from previous years included producers Ted Hope and Tristan Goligher, and experts from leading companies in the sales, distribution and exhibition sectors including Wild Bunch, Protagonist, Vertigo, Soda Pictures, Dogwoof, Curzon Artificial Eye, StudioCanal and Picturehouse.
