Film London Labs: The Work Before The Writing
Date posted: 11.06.2019
Earlier this month, Film London hosted the latest Film London Labs session - a series of ticketed events focused on supporting emerging talent through gaining insight into the career and creative process of established film artists and industry experts.
Hosted at We Are Social, this particular lab centred on ‘the work before the writing’ – the critical work needed in order to approach a story from all angles and bring characters on the page to life, before it goes to draft.
After some morning coffees and networking, our development producer Angeli Macfarlane began the session with a lively talk on treatments. Angeli’s talk covered both the practicalities of different styles and types of treatment, and to whom these treatments would be suited. She delivered a deep dive into how to create a compelling treatment through attention to story, tone and character motivation.
Following this, we were joined by Arabel Charlaff, a practicing psychodynamic psychotherapist and founder of Characters on the Couch, a service which combines clinical expertise with extensive editorial experience in order to create realistic, fully formed characters. Arabel spoke to the group about various psychoanalytic theories, and about how to apply these in creating three-dimensional characters. Alongside this, our attendees were also given writing activities and engaged in group discussions on character psyche and how to connect with their characters’ imagined histories.
We were thrilled to have such engaging speakers and would like to thank them for their time and our thanks also go to We Are Social for hosting us for this event.
