BIFA and Underwire wins for Film London alumni

Date posted: 05.12.2016

This last weekend saw some impressive wins for Film London-supported films and filmmakers at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) and Underwire Festival.

What’s your BIFA?

We were very proud to see London Calling short, Jacked, win Best British Short at the BIFAs. Jacked follows a carjacking and its repercussions, and stars Thomas Turgoose and Patsy Palmer. Director Rene Pannevis and producer Jennifer Eriksson are currently working on their first feature film Looted, which was commissioned through our Microwave scheme.

Also winning BIFAs were Notes on Blindness, which won Best Documentary, and Adult Life Skills, which won the Best Supporting Actor award for Brett Goldstein and Debut Screenwriter for Rachel Tunnard.

Notes on Blindness came to our Micromarket in 2013, while Adult Life Skills went through our Build Your Audience scheme in 2014. Rachel Tunnard is acting as a mentor for filmmakers in the current edition of our Microwave scheme.

Underwire on fire

Underwire is the UK’s only film festival featuring and celebrating female filmmaking talent. Taking away the Best Director award was Eva Sigurdardottir for her London Calling film Rainbow Party, while Anna Dick won Best Editor for London Calling Plus short We Love Moses. Best Producer was won by Loran Dunn for maritime fable Marina + Adrienne, which went through out Shakespeare's Sister scheme.

We were pleased to see a large amount of other London Calling films featured in the programme, including Fire, The Girl in the Dress, Pregnant Pause, Little Soldier and Terminally Happy. Also showing were Love in Idleness from our Still Shakespeare scheme and Wyrdoes from our Shakespeare’s Sister scheme. Wyrdoes director Nat Luurtsema is currently in our Microwave programme.
