Film London Short Film Fund Awardees

Date posted: 19.03.2014

From over 600 applications, Film London has selected 24 film-making teams to produce films through short film-making funds London Calling and London Calling Plus.

"The high calibre and sheer number of applications Film London has received for London Calling and London Calling Plus is a testament to the wealth of talent residing within our city," says Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission. "Sincere thanks to the BFI, Creative Skillset and our borough partners, as well as the mentors and production executives who make our short film schemes a success year after year. I greatly look forward to seeing the finished products from all our fund awardees!"

London Calling and London Calling Plus

19 teams have been awarded up to £4,000 through London Calling (previously called London Borough Film Fund Challenge [LBFFC]), open to all new and emerging film-making teams resident in the capital. London Calling is delivered with borough partners Haringey, Kensington & Chelsea, Lambeth, Redbridge, Southwark, Waltham Forest and Wandsworth, who provide additional opportunities and support to their film-makers as part of the scheme.

Five teams with a track record across film, television or theatre were awarded up to £15,000 through London Calling Plus. Aiming to champion underrepresented voices in the capital, London Calling Plus is this year specifically aimed at emerging BAME talent.

Supported by the BFI, Creative Skillset and London borough partners, the funds are part of the BFI NET.WORK.

Training through Production

In addition to production funding, Film London is providing a programme of training and mentoring for all film-makers. The scheme's excellent track record has attracted a high level of mentors, including award-winning director Sally El Hosaini, Debs Patterson, Carol Morley, Hong Khaou, Josh Appignanesi and Tom Shkolnik.

The successful teams will now receive six training sessions before going into production from April. The completed films will screen for the industry at the London Calling Showcase in September and compete for the London Calling Awards, which includes a cash prize of £2,000 and is selected by a jury of industry experts.

Talent from Across London

Alongside new London talent, some established names have also successfully applied to the schemes: Riz Ahmed (Writer/Director Daytimer), Tara Fitzgerald (Director Prick Thy Neighbour) and Konnie Huq (Writer Ahmed and Mildred) are among the recipients chosen to fulfil their short film ambitions and will all be expanding their skillset through production roles they have never previously undertaken.

Strong Short Film-making Track Record

Film London has over 10 years of experience delivering short films, a showcase of which can be seen in the below video:

Now renamed London Calling, LBFFC has produced over 170 short films. Many up-and-coming film-makers have used the fund to launch a career in the production industries and several have won prestigious international awards, including best European short film award at the Berlin Film Festival.

LBFFC success stories of film-makers who have gone onto make debut features which have garnered industry and critical acclaim, include Alex Taylor (Spaceship), Destiny Ekaragha (Gone Too Far!) and Hong Khaou (Lilting).
