Lilting releases nationwide at 30 cinemas

UK audiences can now see Film London Microwave’s critically-acclaimed eighth feature as it opens at an incredible 30 cinemas across the UK next week.

Written and directed by Cambodia-born British filmmaker Hong Khaou, Lilting is distributed by Curzon Film World's Artificial Eye in the UK. Buzz surrounding the film has rocketed ever since its premiere earlier this year at the 30th Sundance Film Festival.

The Lilting process

Lilting is Khaou's debut feature following three successful shorts, two of which were also produced through Film London. Working as writer for theatre, the training through production scheme gave Khaou the platform to adapt Lilting from a play to a film. In Sight & Sound, Khaou discusses how important the Microwave workshop and mentor process was to developing the story:

“The biggest change really came from Clio (Barnard, The Selfish Giant) when she helped me move a key scene to create a pivotal place in the story...Even if you don’t act on all the notes, sometimes when you hear what they have to say, it can confirm that that’s where you don’t want to go. Everything is good in that sense. It gave me confidence to stick with my decisions.”

With moving performances from an all-star cast led by Ben Whishaw (Skyfall) and Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), Lilting offers a touching exploration of love and grief across boundaries of language, culture and age. It joins other Film London Microwave films including critically acclaimed iLL Manors, BAFTA-nominated Shifty, and Borrowed Time, which was awarded Best of the Fest at the 2012 Edinburgh Film Festival.
