Getting distribution right: Build Your Audience opens for applications
Date posted: 12.02.2014
Are you working on your first or second feature? Thinking about how to navigate the new distribution landscape? Applications open today for Film London's Build Your Audience, and it might be just the training scheme you're looking for.
The innovative four month bespoke programme looks at selling in the marketplace, sourcing and maximising audiences, and negotiating the impact of new digital technologies on the traditional routes of distribution and marketing.
Fresh for 2014 is a partnership with We Are Colony, a soon-to-launch global Video on Demand platform for independent film. A select number of film-making teams participating in Build Your Audience will be given the opportunity to begin their distribution programme on the platform.
Distribution strategies devised with experts
Running 29 April-1 August, the team behind Build Your Audience work with up to 10 film-making teams to develop a bespoke distribution and marketing strategy based on the needs of individual projects.
Across a carefully curated programme of workshops and networking opportunities, the programme focuses on developing business and entrepreneurial skills, as well as providing a broad picture of the current distribution landscape.
Pitched at low to micro-budget film-making teams, Build Your Audience offers practical advice on techniques ranging from the traditional through to the more "disruptive". It helps participants discover the optimum way of reaching an audience for their film - be it theatrical, festival or digital distribution.
Proven model for success
This is the second year that Film London has held Build Your Audience. Commenting on the announcement of a second round, Film London and British Film Commission CEO Adrian Wootton said:
"Build Your Audience continues to address the rapidly changing nature of feature film distribution, taking on board all the exciting and innovative ways film-makers across the globe are using to reach audiences. The training addresses a very real skills gap which exists within our industry, especially for the UK's emerging talent"
And in the last 12 months, the model has been proven to work.
"We came away with a rounded and greater understanding of the market and a direct distribution strategy approved by the industry which has given us loads of confidence going forward." - James Levison, Producer on Leave to Remain, which premiered at the 2013 BFI London Film Festival
The 2013 programme supported 12 teams from across the UK, with many enjoying considerable festival success:
- Desiree Akhavan's Appropriate Behaviour, a humorous exploration of bisexual identity, premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January
- Coming of age drama Leave to Remain, based on the true stories of young unaccompanied asylum seekers in the UK, premiered at the 2013 BFI London Film Festival
- Justin Edgar's We are the Freaks, a surreal take on the teenage drama, premiered at the 2013 Edinburgh Film Festival in official competition
Build Your Audience (formally Audience on Demand) is presented in partnership with We are Colony and supported by Creative Skillset.
