Musical Sensation Filmed in London

Date posted: 07.01.2013

Les Misérables, the latest film from Academy Award-winning director Tom Hooper (The King's Speech) stars Hugh Jackman (The Prestige), Academy Award -winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator), Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises), Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter series) and Sacha Baron Cohen (Hugo). Shot almost entirely in the UK with a number of key scenes in London, Les Misérables opens in cinemas across the UK on 11 January.

Adapted from Victor Hugo's 150-year-old novel, the original stage musical is set in 19th-century France, telling a story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption - a timeless testament to the endurance of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by ruthless officer Javert (Crowe) after Valjean breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette (Seyfried), their lives change forever.

Film London assisted the production, suggesting a variety of Paris doubles.

When scouting for locations for the interior of the Bishop's Chapel in Digne, the production needed something which would reflect a rundown richness, with an essence of France. St Mary Magdalene Church in Paddington (featured as January's Location of the Month) proved to be the perfect location, fulfilling the requirements for the shoot and being large enough to hold the film's sizeable crew.

The Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, a domed riverside masterpiece and iconic landmark in South East London, was chosen to serve as the famous Paris monument Place de la Bastille. The location provided a centrepiece for a funeral procession, as well as part of the film's finale.

The finale portrays the French Revolution of 1848, when rebels were building barricades in the streets of Paris. Sourcing hundreds of pieces of reclaimed furniture, the film-making team had only two weeks to build a barricade and transport it to Greenwich for the shoot. Due to its unusually large size, special permission had to be given to drive this prop to Greenwich.

Other filming locations include France, Chatham, England and Northamptonshire, England.

Les Misérables opens in cinemas across the UK on 11 January.
