Berlinale 2012
Date posted: 08.02.2012
The 62nd edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, aka the Berlinale, will kick off on 9 February, once again providing the winter fix of new films for the international industry and savvy audiences.
Film London will be at the Festival to showcase the capital and the agency's production support services as part of the UK contingent present at the UK Film Centre - Filming & Services.
Based at the Stand 002 in the foyer of the Marriott Hotel, the UK Film Centre will also host representatives from Northern Ireland Screen, Creative Scotland and Film Agency for Wales. The Centre will promote the UK industry, including locations, facilities, talent and funding opportunities.
In addition, on 11 February, Film London will be presenting Strawberry Fields to industry representatives gathered in the German capital. One of the latest projects produced through Film London Microwave, Strawberry Fields is a coming-of-age tale about sibling rivalry, sexual awakening and mind games. The film, directed by Frances Lea, premiered at the BFI London Film Festival last October to great critical acclaim and signed a distribution deal with Soda Pictures in the UK.
The 10-day festival is expected to see around 19,000 professional visitors from 115 countries, including 4,000 journalists, and over 400 films as part of its public programme.
Amongst the films presented at this year's Festival will be the latest film by Jarman Award winner Luke Fowler, All Divided Selves as well as Betty Drunk, a provocative new short from FLAMIN Productions alumni Laure Provost.
Festival audiences will also get a chance to see anticipated productions recently shot in London, including the Robert Pattinson-starrer Bel Ami, I, Anna, with Charlotte Rampling and Gabriel Byrne, and a special screening of The Iron Lady. The Festival will also pay special homage to Michael Powell by screening his memorable 1943 London-shot classic The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.
Finally, the Berlinale's European Film Market (EFM) and the Co-Production Market, will once again offer two platforms in which industry professionals will vie to foster contacts and achieve deals.
