Borough Film Funds Open for Application

Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Film London give local talent an opportunity to shine with the launch of the London Borough Film Fund Challenge, a film-making competition offering up to £4,000 towards the production of a short film.

The Kid in Croydon

The look and feel of 1980s London needed to be re-created for scenes in Nick Moran's The Kid, which goes on release this month. Adapted from Kevin Lewis' critically acclaimed autobiographical novel, the production shot key scenes at St. George's Walk in Croydon.

Funding, Training & Industry Events

Apply now for your place at the next Film London Exhibitors' Forum on 16 September, taking place at the Phoenix Cinema following their centenary restoration project. This session offers an opportunity for exhibitors, festivals organisers, art centres, local authority film officers, and freelancers, to share sector news, opportunities and best practice. This autumn The Cinema Museum in SE11, famed for having one of the largest and richest collections of cinema memorabilia in the world, will be organizing a series of eye opening and rewarding events for cinephiles everywhere. On 4 Sept Ray Harryhausen joins biographer Tony Dalton to discuss his career in stop motion animation.

Anyone interested in film-making, and more specifically in the Raindance Film Festival, should head to the Raindance Open House session at the Apollo Cinema on 7 Sept.

Places are still available on the HNC Media part time course for over 19s. You will learn to use 16mm film, digital video and sound and the course encourages experimentation and creative development. For further information visit: www.south-thames.ac.uk.

Festivals & Screenings
Sarah Turner's FLAMIN-funded film Perestroika starts its theatrical run at the ICA tonight with a director's Q&A. Film screenings will be taking place at the venue until 16 Sept.

Catch the last few days of the London International Animation Festival and I Will Tell International Film Festival at venues across London. The 2nd Brazilian Film Festival starts today and the Portobello Film Festival kicks off tomorrow. Other events to look forward to this week include The British Urban Film Festival and the Walthamstow International Film Festival. Visit the Film London events calendar for more information.

Residents in SE15 are organising their own community-led film festivals this month. Two festivals - Nunhead Free Film Festival and Peckham Free Film Festival - will both run from 5-12 September. Free screenings will take place at unusual community venues, including Nunhead Cemetery and Peckham multi-story car park roof. Event details can be seen in the 'What's On' section of www.freefilmfestivals.org.

Submissions

There's still time to submit your 3-minute film about London's cycling revolution. Transport for London has teamed up with Film London and the Bicycle Film Festival to invite budding film-makers to submit documentary, fiction or animation shorts that look at the city 'on the move' and at its transformation through new schemes such as the Barclays Cycle Hire. Get your application in by 6 September.

London-born Archie Panjabi picked up the outstanding supporting actress award for her role in The Good Wife as the US honoured stars of the small screen at the Emmys ceremony in LA this weekend. Anne Hathaway and her mannequin double have been spotted on bikes in Shoreditch on the set of Lone Scherfig's romantic comedy One Day.

Other News

The final episode of award-winning police drama The Bill aired on ITV last night. The London-shot series, which has been a regular fixture on the small screen since 1984, bowed out with an audience of 4.4 million.
