London comes alive with outdoor activities over the summer months - from school fetes to food fairs, everyone wants to take advantage of the sunny climes. Year on year more opportunities to watch a film under the stars are also becoming available and this year boasts more open-air screenings across the capital than ever before. Londoners can choose from a wide range of films on outdoor screens, and sometimes even a barbeque to boot. So when the sun is about to dip past the horizon, grab your favourite blanket and settle in for some cinematic treats.
BFI Films on the Flytower
Until 22 August
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the BFI National Archive, selected shorts and features from their extensive collection will be projected on the National Theatre Flytower. Highlights include Auden and Britten at GPO on 30 July, centered on the cinematic works of WH Auden and Benjamin Britten.
Film4 Summer Screen
29 July- 8 August
Somerset House open their doors yet again for Film4 Summer Screen, which features a special preview of summer blockbuster Knight and Day, as well as screenings of action-packed flicks and cinematic monuments, such as Woody Allen's Manhattan and Bob Fosse's Cabaret.
Earl's Court Festival
30 July
To round-up Earl's Court Festival in July there will be an open air screening of the box office hit, Mamma Mia.
Outdoor Cinema at Hackney WickED
30-31 July 2010
As well as the chance to see a range of films from local artists at the outdoor cinema at Hackney WickED, on the second day of screenings you can also fill up on barbecue food before the movies start to roll. Over 18s can all enjoy this free event as part of the popular arts festival.
The Screen on the Green
7 August - 18 September
The combination of a huge inflatable screen, state of the art digital projector, and stunning outdoor settings, makes for the perfect summer entertainment. Catch different screenings (from The Graduate to Casablanca) at Dulwich Park, The Horniman Museum, Roundwood Park and Queens Park.
Cinema Under The Stars
18- 22 August
As the name suggests, this summer's event offers people the chance to watch some of their favourite movies under the starry skies of Syon Park in Brentford. Films to look forward to include: Dirty Dancing and Top Gun.
Hairspray in the Garden
30 August
The critically acclaimed film version of the musical Hairspray (starring Nikki Blonsky, John Travolta and Michelle Pfeiffer) will be playing in the lovely garden of the Dulwich Picture Gallery. Learn dance moves from the film and win prizes for best hair and costume.
The Scoop at More London
15 September - 1 October
In accordance to the spirit of the More London Free Festival, the public will have free entry to open air screenings of widely praised films such as Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker and Pretty Woman at the riverside amphitheatre.
