Jarman Award Shortlist Announced

Date posted: 03.08.2010

Film London and Channel 4 in association with the Whitechapel Gallery have announced Spartacus Chetwynd, Ben Rivers, Zineb Sedira and Emily Wardill are part of this year's shortlist for the respected Jarman Award.

Launched by Film London Artists' Moving Image Network (FLAMIN) in 2008 to honour the legacy of transgressive film-maker Derek Jarman, the Award highlights the work and talent of UK-based artists who use the moving image as their medium and whose body of work is highly innovative and challenges traditional conventions.

The rich and varied careers of the four shortlisted artists attracted the attention of this year's Award jury, formed by Tate Modern Film Curator Stuart Comer, Whitechapel Gallery Director Iwona Blazwick, Avi Grewal from Channel 4 Documentaries, ArtReview Editor Mark Rappolt, film-maker John Akomfrah and artist Gillian Wearing. The jury earmarked Chetwynd, Rivers, Sedira and Wardill for their highly distinctive voices and uncompromising approach to artist film-making, from unsettling post apocalyptic visions to poignant and intimate explorations of themes of identity and displacement.

The Jarman Award is comprised of a cash prize of £10,000 and a broadcast commission from Channel 4's acclaimed 3 Minute Wonder (3MW). It is the only award of its kind to offer artist film-makers substantial financial support plus the opportunity to showcase their work to a mass audience on national television.

Coupled with that, a UK touring programme screening works by the shortlisted artists will take place over the coming weeks at venues throughout the UK. The tour will culminate in a day of showings and performances at London's Whitechapel Gallery on Saturday 2 October.

The winner of this year's Jarman Award will follow in the footsteps of Luke Fowler and Lindsay Seers, who won the inaugural and 2009 Awards respectively. After receiving the Jarman Award, Fowler's work has gone on to become the subject of major solo exhibitions at both the Kunsthalle Zürich and the Serpentine Gallery in London. Meanwhile, the broadcast commission by Lindsay Seers is planned to air on Channel 4 later this year.

The winner will be revealed on 5 October at a ceremony at The Whitechapel Gallery in East London.
