Reuters Plaza in The Constant Gardener
Date posted: 01.11.2005
The Constant Gardener was filmed on location in Berlin, Nairobi, numerous other parts of Kenya and London. Many London locations were used, including Reuters Plaza - part of the Canary Wharf Group.
Two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz head the cast of this romantic thriller, adapted by Jeffrey Caine from the novel of the same name by John le Carre.
The film starts with a brutal murder of activist Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz) and the evidence points to a crime of passion. Mild-mannered and unambitious Justin Quayle (Ralph Fiennes), haunted by remorse, embarks on a personal odyssey in search of the truth. Using his privileged access to diplomatic secrets he risks his own life, stopping at nothing to uncover a conspiracy more far-reaching and deadly than he could ever have imagined.
Reuters Plaza was used to capture a key scene involving the leading man leaving Canary Wharf underground station to meet one of his many contacts. This illustrious modern location shows the spirit of London's business district to great effect.
Until the mid 1960's, Canary Wharf was a cargo warehouse at the centre of West India Docks at the heart of Docklands. New technology and containerisation meant that London Docklands couldn't keep up with its competitors and by the early 1970's most of the docks had closed. However, there has been a positive regeneration of this area and in 1991 Canary Wharf opened. The working population for this area at end of 2002 was 55,000 and business continues to thrive and grow.
Now the Canary Wharf Estate extends over 86 acres. Some of the world's leading architects and designers have been involved in its creation. The offices at Canary Wharf have been built to the highest standards, set in a landscape providing a relaxing and healthy environment for office workers and visitors alike.
