Mediabox, which is currently closed for applications, is a fund offering 13-19 year olds the opportunity to create their own media projects - enabling young people to gain new skills, express themselves and get their voices heard.

Established by The Department for Education and Skills in 2007, it is a grant scheme which funds organisations to facilitate the creation and distribution of youth-led media content, using print, television, film, radio, digital, or online media to communicate their ideas and views on issues that matter to them.

In general a Mediabox project should be led by consultations with young people and young people should be at the heart of the project right the way through, not just in terms of deciding which issues/stories* are covered, but also in terms of having input in how the project develops and in gaining some idea of the project management skills required to deliver it.

Hundreds of organisations across England have already benefited from the scheme, impacting the lives of thousands of young people from a diverse range of backgrounds. Some examples of these projects can be seen here: www.media-box.co.uk/gallery.

Film London co-ordinates projects in the London region. Our main role is to offer impartial advice to those applying from London to ensure they have as strong an application as possible.  All assessments of London organisations and all decisions on national funding are then made by First Light, the organisation based in Birmingham which co-ordinates the fund nationally.

* Issues/stories does not have to mean gun crime/knife crime/postcode wars etc. (although it may), it can also be positive stories about how young people are living their lives and interests which are important to them.

Mediabox is not presently open to any new applications, subject to a review of the program by the Department of Education.
