Guide to Filming in London
June 2012 - Lee Valley Athletics Centre
Fast Girls charts the rollercoaster journey of a British female sprint relay team. Shot on location in London in 2011, including at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre, the film stars Lenora Crichlow (Being Human) and Lily James (Wrath of the Titans). Directed by Regan Hall Fast Girls was co-written by Noel Clark, who also co-stars, and produced by Damian Jones who most recently made the Oscar®-winning The Iron Lady.
Fast Girls follows two characters from either side of the track, streetwise Shania from a council estate and middle class Lisa. Their two worlds collide as their personalities and determination clash when they are thrown to together in their bid for success in the sprint relay team.
A sports stadium was central to the plot so the production needed to find somewhere which was flexible and could host a significant period of shooting. Co-producer Ben Rimmersays "we selected Lee Valley Indoor Stadium due to its state-of-the-art European architecture and its London location". The location not only acted as the setting for the team's training ground but also for the film's penultimate scenes as the competitors take part in a fictional Barcelona Athletics events.
Shooting at Lee Valley was an apt location at it was also the training ground for half the British Olympic and Paralympic team who were using it throughout much of the shoot. Working around the team's training hours coincided well with script requirements and Mick Bond, Centre Manager at Lee Valley was helpful in ensuring the crew could capture everything they needed.
Rimmer recalls "I managed to arrange another two successive day shoot amidst the already full British Olympic training programme".
While Bond commented that although the demands of the production were quite significant, "the Centre and the staff rose to the occasion and I think the end result was a great bit of cinema".
Located in Edmonton, north London, Lee Valley Athletics Centre embodies a unique approach to running sports venues. A training ground for professional athletes all over the country, the Centre is also known for its approach and commitment to community spirit.
The venue is a UK Athletics High Performance Centre for Excellence for both able bodied and disabled athletes. Since it's opening in 2007, it has attracted more than 500,000 visitors many of them grassroots athletes trying out the sport for the first time. It includes the only indoor 200m six-lane track in the south of England and permanent seating for 500 both inside and out.
