Guide to Filming in London
June 2011 - Great Eastern Street NCP
Blitz, the recently released feature adaptation of novelist Ken Bruen's police thriller of the same name, stars Jason Statham (The Transporter, Snatch) as a hard edged detective dispatched to take down a serial killer targeting police officers. The Wire's Aiden Gillen is the psychopathic killer aiming for tabloid immortality by executing cops in south east London.
Paddy Considine and David Morrissey also star in the British action thriller from Lionsgate UK. Emerging talent Elliot Lester directed the film from a screenplay by Nathan Parker.
Based at 3 Mills Studio, Blitz shot in London for 7 weeks in the summer of 2009. Location shooting in the capital included the Great Eastern Street NCP in Shoreditch, east London. The towering car park provided an urban backdrop to a key scene in the film, a high octane chase sequence and shoot out on the roof of the building.
"The rooftop looks incredible at night with the view of Shoreditch on one side and the city on the other," said Blitz location manager Claire Tovey. "It was a great location for us as we were able to shoot a difficult scene that involved special effects and stunts throughout the night".
The Great Eastern Street NCP boasts a fantastic surrounding infrastructure for unit parking, camera positions on adjacent rooftops and of course plenty of onsite crew parking if required. The floors, basements and rooftops of the car park can be fully isolated to give productions all the creative and practical freedom they need to get that perfect shot.
Other productions to have used the Great Eastern Street car park include London Boulevard, another Ken Bruen adaptation, which starred Colin Firth and Keira Knightley. The NCP has also proved popular with several TV dramas and commercials, as well as a setting for photography shoots.
Great Eastern Street is not the only NCP car park to have recently hosted glamorous stars, as Unitbase's Lex Wade attests "model Kate Moss recently took off in a helicopter from the Croydon Whitgift NCP for the new Rimmel London commercial".
Blitz is Lionsgate UK's first British project to be completed since it announced its plans to ramp up local production activity in 2008. It also marks the first collaboration between Jason Statham and Lionsgate UK since 2008's The Bank Job. Film London was integral in bringing the production to the capital with meetings held with Lionsgate as far back as year before the film went into production.
