Guide to Filming in London
November 2010 - Camberwell New Cemetery
London Boulevard is the story of a man newly released from prison who falls in love with a reclusive young movie star and finds himself in a duel with a vicious gangster. Directing a cast that includes Colin Farrell (as Mitchell) and Keira Knightley (as Charlotte), screenwriting Oscar-winner and first time director William Monahan (The Departed) was also responsible for adapting the screenplay on this London-set feature.
Location Manager, David Broder, was keen to source locations across the capital and to ensure that locations, where possible, remained true to the script - maintaining the "realistic and correct" portrayal of the key characters and their roots. And so the search began.
Whilst a cemetery in South East London might not seem a particularly popular location - Camberwell New Cemetery has seen an unprecedented volume of filming recently: with high profile projects such as Clint Eastwards forthcoming feature Hereafter amongst them.
Built in 1927, Camberwell New Cemetery contains a number of Second World War burials and war graves. Within the later built Honor Crematorium (1937), there is also a stunning example of a stained glass window from that period.
For David Broder, the cemetery was essentially selected because of a scene involving the funeral of an old friend of 'Mitch', the character played by Colin Farrell. David explains: "I wanted to get some height and possibly a view and I remembered the cemetery on the rise from Peckham Rye to Herne Hill. It has glimpses of the City and Canary Wharf and it is more open, and less overgrown, than the more traditional and famous Victorian cemeteries."
However - it was when they had found the pub location for Mitch's local at Elephant and Castle (The Beehive) that the cemetery location was finally confirmed. On a Director's recce - which incorporated a visit to this pub location - David happened to see on an information board a funeral notice for a regular who had passed away. The funeral was at the local church with the burial to be held at Camberwell New Cemetery. "That clinched it for us" he said.
