Although the whole city is expected to be immersed in the spirit of the Games, large parts of the capital will remain unaffected, especially the outer boroughs to the north, south and west of central London, not to mention the greater South East region. These areas boast a rich variety of locations and spaces for filming (please visit our section Alternative Spaces and Locations 'Doubles' further down for more details).
Similarly, the studios in and around the capital, including Pinewood, Shepperton, Ealing and 3 Mills, will be operating as usual during the Games period. Please visit our Studios and Facilities section for further information and contact details.
With over 300 sporting events taking place, 20,000 media representatives covering the Games and hundreds of thousands of visitors expected in the city, Central London will become a hive of activity during the Games. As a result, some popular locations will see access restricted during the Olympic period. These include:
- Alexandra Palace
- Canada House
- Glaziers Hall
- 4 Hamilton Place
- Islington Design Centre
- Lancaster House
- Museum of London Docklands
- Old Billingsgate
- Pelham House
- Somerset House
- Spencer House
Alongside these, a number of other spaces will be used by National Olympic Committees and some sports facilities and local leisure centres will be used as training camps for the athletes. If you would like to know more about what spaces will be unavailable during Games time, please Contact us.
Live Sites
Large outdoor screens will be erected in open air spaces for the general public to follow the Games. These 'Live Sites' will be in popular spots and are expected to attract large crowds during peak times.
Locations of the Live Sites:
- Hyde Park (27 July - 12 Aug)
- Victoria Park (27 July - 12 Aug)
- Trafalgar Square (29 Aug - 9 Sep, Paralympic Games only)
Alternative Spaces and Location 'Doubles'
Whilst central London is expected to be full of tourists and international media, sections of the city will remain largely unaffected by Games activity and available for filming.
London has many versatile and unique locations, and the number of spaces and facilities available allows the capital to offer solutions not just in the central boroughs. For example, Croydon has doubles for City locations whilst areas such as Richmond have green spaces doubling for Royal Parks.
Recently, films such as The King's Speech, The Special Relationship and The Iron Lady have found locations to double as Buckingham Palace, Whitehall and Parliament buildings in the outer London boroughs.
