Guide to Filming in London

Frequently Asked Questions

How will I get about the capital during Games time?

Improvements to the transport network are already being implemented. A special network of roads and measures will be in place to cater for Olympic athletes and officials, but it amounts for less than 4% of all roads in the capital. The vast majority of roads will remain open to everyday traffic. On days when events are taking place on the streets of central London, normal routes may be affected with diversions in place. Road works at key central locations will be suspended for the duration of the Games. Spectators are being encouraged to exclusively use public transport to get to the Olympic Park and the events start times are designed to miss the rush hour. For more information about transport, please visit our Hospitality and Transport During the Games section.

Can I film in London during the Games?

Yes. Although the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be a large scale and demanding operation for the city, vast parts of London will remain unaffected by the Games, especially in the outer boroughs of the city and the nearby South East area. Film London can suggest alternative locations that double for buildings unavailable during the Games. If you have any large scale filming set for 2012 involving central London then we advise you plan and book early and if possible schedule your shoot outside of the 17 days of Games. All studios will be operating as normal. For more details, please visit our Filming and the Olympics section.

Can I
get information on events and Olympic activity impacting on filming in London?

Yes. As well as visiting our Filming and the Olympics section, you can receive regular updates by signing up for Film London's fortnightly newsletter, which provides information on events and Games activity impacting on filming in London. If you would like to receive this update, please e-mail london2012@filmlondon.org.uk with "Subscribe to Filming in 2012 Newsletter"  in the subject line.

I am a news crew wanting to cover the Games. What should I do?

Only a number of media outlets are officially accredited to film at the Olympic venues during the Games. Broadcasters looking to report on the wider story and celebrations taking place in London during the summer of 2012 need to contact the London Media Centre.

Can I feature the Olympic logo in my production?

Incidental filming of the Games branding is allowed. However the Olympic branding is highly protected to prevent unauthorized commercial use and illicit associations with the Games. Please refer to our Olympic Branding section for more details.

Will I be able to hire kit for my production in London during 2012?

No shortage of equipment and facilities for the production industries is expected during the Games. However, film-makers are advised to survey the availability of their favoured suppliers and source the equipment they will need in advance. For directories listing equipment hire and other facilities, visit our Useful Links section.

Are my production costs going to rocket if I shoot in London during 2012?

The Mayor of London has been running a campaign to encourage fair pricing during the Games, which has been embraced by the business community. The Fair Price Charter includes hotels, taxis and other means of transport, cafés, etc.

Prices of services and facilities specific to the production industries should also remain unaffected.

Can I get tickets to the Games?

Following an application period, a large number of tickets to the Olympic and Paralympic competitions have already been allocated. The remaining tickets, including those offered for re-sale, for the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will become available for sale on a first come, first served basis from April 2012 on the London 2012 tickets website.

Please be aware of unofficial websites offering tickets as these may be fraudulent. Alongside the activity taking place inside the Olympic venues, a range of events will be happening on the streets of London which can be watched and attended for free. Large screens will be available at public spaces for people to follow the Games and the Olympic Park, featuring cultural events and stunning new architecture, will be open to visitors.

Can I film at the Olympic venues during the Games?

Only a number of international media outlets are accredited to access and film at the Olympic venues during the Games. For film crews or non-accredited media, filming is not allowed within the restricted zone, which includes any Olympic venue and 200 metres of the surrounding area (for road events such as the marathon and road cycling, the zone extends, primarily, only a few metres either side of the road). In a few cases, the proposed zone goes slightly further to protect the areas spectators will walk through from a major transport hub and other places.

For most of the venues the regulations will only be in force for a short time – e.g. the day before an event starts and the days it takes place. For the Olympic Park zone, the regulations will apply for 35 days.

What is the Cultural Olympiad?

The Cultural Olympiad is a series of nationwide cultural events both large and small designed to celebrate the spirit of London 2012 and the world focus on the city. The Cultural Olympiad will culminate in the London 2012 Festival, a selection of free and ticketed curated cultural events taking part across the country from 21 June to 9 September 2012.
