6th London Spanish Film Festival
Date: 24 September - 07 October
The 6th annual London Spanish Film Festival returns this year with an impressive roster of films.
With a large number of UK premieres, the festival offers attendees a rare chance to see critically acclaimed Spanish cinematic works before they hit the big screen. Daniel Monzon's riveting prison drama Celda 211 (Cell 211), which won Best Film at the 2010 Goya Awards will be opening the festival while renowned director Julio Medem's (Lovers of the Arctic Circle, Sex and Lucía) first feature in English: Room in Rome (Habitacion en Roma) will close the festival. Award-winning director Carlos Saura will also be at the festival to talk about his latest film Io, Don Giovanni, and his love of music.
Among the seven UK premieres are Family Strip from director Luis Minarro (producer of Cannes Palme d'Or winner Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives), Circuit from director Xavier Ribera and the documentary Balenciaga from Oskar Tejedor - just to name a few. Actors Jose Maria Pou and actress Candela Pena will also be participants of a round-table discussion organized at the Institut francais.
Adding to the wealth of interesting cinematic activities is a special feature dedicated to Maribel Verdu (Tetro, Pan's Labyrinth and Y tu mama tambien), a well-respected actress known for having one of the longest and most solid acting careers in Spain. Furthermore, the Spanish writer and activist Jorge Semprun will be present to introduce the film Z (1969), which he co-wrote the script for with Costa Gavras.
