The third Film London Production Finance Market (PFM) took place on Wednesday 21 – Thursday 22 October 2009. Dedicated to connecting international producers and financiers to encourage new film financing relationships the PFM is the only event of its kind in the UK.

Pierre-Ange Le Pogam, Co-founder of EuropaCorp with partner Luc Besson, made a rare public appearance in the UK to deliver the PFM’s annual keynote address. Le Pogam’s attendance at the PFM complemented the Market’s stronger European focus this year – a drive which saw an increase in the number and calibre of producers and financiers from Europe. This strategy allowed delegates to exploit potential new partnerships with the Continent offering new financing opportunities beyond conventional methods.

This year the PFM received significant funding from MEDIA - the EU support programme for the European audiovisual industry. The MEDIA funding allowed the PFM to significantly increase opportunities for experienced European producers and financiers, providing EU film professionals with improved access to film markets. This work also aims to increase co-production deals between UK and Europe as well as strengthening the position of the PFM as a truly global market within the international film calendar.

The independent film financing landscape is constantly changing and the PFM adapts to reflect this. In view of the economic downturn it is even more vital for financiers to have access to quality film product. In response to this PFM 2009 had fewer producers presenting slates, instead focusing on single projects at later stages of development which saw the average production budget rise to $10.7m, up from $7.8m in 2008.

The market was attended by 150 delegates from 14 countries including Portugal, Spain, Sweden, South Africa, New Zealand and the USA. Leading companies attending the PFM in 2009 included Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures International, Miramax, Focus Features, Pathé, Optimum Releasing and Lionsgate. From Europe Wild Bunch (France), RAI Cinema (Italy), Haut et Court (France), Filmax (Spain) and MK2 (France) were among the financiers, 57 companies in total.

Just some of the 54 production companies presenting projects at this year’s event were: Razor Film Produktion GmbH (Waltz with Bashir), Warp Films (This Is England), Qwerty Films (The Duchess), Tornasol Films (Coppola’s Tetro), Recorded Picture Company (Creation), Origin Pictures (Love Hate) and Number 9 Films (How to Lose Friends & Alienate People).
